Soulpepper - A Christmas Carol

No matter how many times I've seen this classic Christmas tale performed by Soulpepper, it is amazing. Brought three first-timers with me this evening, who really enjoyed it. The staging is clever, the acting is great, particularly the ghosts and Ebenezer. A fantastic seasonal family show.

Ross Petty - Peter Pan in Wonderland

A hilarious mash-up of Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan, laced with jokes galore, Peter Pan in Wonderland is another successful, funny family show. Ross Petty's last performance as the evil pirate capped off years of our family tradition enjoying his pantos. While we will continue to make this a key part of our holiday celebrations, we will miss him.

Ossington Theatre - It's a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play

As charming as the movie, the radio play evoked the same emotions and we felt like we were part of the live broadcast. A talented cast, playing multiple roles with adept impressions - the Jimmy Stewart impersonator was the best.

Tuesday, 15 December 2015

Mirvish - Traces: 7 Fingers

A seamless series of circus acts with barely enough interludes for the performers to catch their breath, this is an incredibly talented, strong and charismatic cast. Non-stop action, thrills and amazing feats - we strongly recommend this show!

Mirvish - The Phantom of the Opera

This new version of the Phantom does not disappoint. The sets and costumes are absolutely awesome.‎ The chandelier is a real centerpiece. The music, of course, is the original score - so amazing and the three main characters gave us everything we could hope for.

TSO POPS - Cirque de la Symphonie: Holiday Hits

Awesome and amazing - another outstanding night with the TSO. The festive music beautifully complemented the acrobatics. In particular, the Bolero version of the Little Drummer Boy was a fitting serenade for the strong men, both of which were  unbelievable. A very holiday spirit, lifted even higher by the ESA chorus.‎ The performance in the lobby before the show by the U of T Trombone Choir was a special treat - look out for more performances by them in the new year.

Dee Snider's Rock and Roll Christmas

Campy and fun, this unique version of a familiar tale of learning to appreciate what you already have and almost wasted, really rocked in the Christmas spirit.

Friday, 4 December 2015

Art of Time Ensemble - To All a Good Night

Another series of great arrangements on a stage filled with superior talent. The first half was a fantastic big band version of The Nutcracker. The second half was a seasonal treat with a mixture of less well know Christmas songs and our favourite classics, with innovative arrangements, including a few mash-ups. The vocalists were all fabulous and charming, capped off by the Canadian Children's Opera Chorus.

Mirvish - Cinderella

With some tweaks to the traditional story and comic approach, this version of Cinderella is appealing to both the young, of which there were plenty in evidence, and the old. You didn't quite know what to expect all the time, which made for a fresh experience.

Tuesday, 1 December 2015

Factory Theatre - Bombay Black

Extremely well done, this gender bending portrayal of love, pain, regret and revenge was compelling. The acting was outstanding - we strongly recommend this play.

One of a Kind Show and Sale - Christmas 2015

With the largest collection of artisans in one place, at the perfect time of the year, you should not have trouble taking care of most of your Christmas list here with some lovely and unique gifts, across all price ranges. Unfortunately, many of us get carried away buying for ourselves with all this temptation. Fashions, jewelry, ceramics, furniture, glass, sculpture, paintings, etc. - there is something for everyone's taste and budget. Tickets savings can be had online, but time is running out as the show finishes soon.

Friday, 27 November 2015

Knightwood - Nirbhaya

The impact of the brutal attack on a young woman and her companion on a bus in New Delhi galvanized a nation.‎ Sharing some very powerful and difficult stories about the hardships women face in India, we were left with a deep sense of sadness that permeated for many days. A very moving and sensitive play that is important to experience.

Thursday, 26 November 2015

Mirvish - Dirty Dancing

While no one can recreate the magic of Patrick Swayzey and Jennifer Grey, these two gave it their all. The dancing was amazing, the old fashioned ambiance of the resort charmed us, the drama was authentic and the audience roared at the end.‎ While the dialogue was a little stilted at parts, it was more than made up for by keeping true to the story and the beautiful vocals - Jennlee Shallow and Doug Carpenter (just wish we got to hear more from Doug - he was awesome). If you're a fan of the movie, this show won't let you down.

Off Mirvish - Seminar

Impressive performances, particularly from Tom McCamus, who creates a perfectly unlikable but compelling character. Neurosis abound, impressive dialogue interspersed with laughs and even a little salacious behavior. We really enjoyed this show.

Tuesday, 24 November 2015

CanStage - Domesticated

Very well done, for an unpleasant topic. Featuring Paul Gross, the acting is amazing and felt like a genuine portrayal of the impact of a scandal each of the injured parties. I didn't quite catch the parallel between the male/female dynamic in the natural world to events in the play as it unfolded - I want to see it again and pay more attention to the species commentary, as this was very insightful.

Sunday, 22 November 2015

ROM - Pompeii, Wildlife Photography

Pompeii: In the Shadow of the Volcano is a fascinating show. The accompanying commentary was compelling and to the point. Lots of incredible artifacts, from the beautiful copper statues and other incredible artifacts and fresco's preserved by the volcanic ash to the haunting plaster casts of some of the thousands who lost their lives. Really brings home the power of nature.

The Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibit was jam packed with awesome nature photographs, wonderfully capturing the beauty and diversity of the natural world.

TSO - James Bond: The Music

Fantastic show! Hard to beat the iconic music of James Bond. Both Ron Bohmer and Capathia Jenkins more than met our expectations, in particular, it doesn't get much better than Capathia - so sweet! The conductor and orchestra were clearly into the music and definitely an audience favourite. Introducing a few other spy-fi themes from other classic films in the same genre in the second half was a great idea. Contributing to the ambiance, we had the treat of sharing our row with a trio of Bond fans handsomely decked out in tuxes and evening dress.‎

Thursday, 19 November 2015

Factory Theatre - Banana Boys

A very interesting male perspective that I can't say ‎I have experienced before. Surprising sensitivity interspersed with racial strife and relationship disappointments. While I didn't always get some of the asides, the clever use of cell phones and outstanding acting across the board made for a wonderful experience that kept us talking long after the show ended.

Tuesday, 17 November 2015

National Geographic Live! - Ocean Wild: The Light Beneath the Seas

Great show, featuring various fascinating underwater creatures and habitats, closing with a fabulous section on dolphins - they're smarter than you think! An avid conservationist, underwater photographer Brian Skerry's passion clearly came across and it is heartening to have such a compelling advocate fighting for marine life.

AGO - J.M.W. Turner: Painting Set Free; Camera Atomica; Liz Magor

Squeaking in before the end of a show is always a mistake, as the crowds swell, but it was nonetheless worth the visit.

I started with the J.W. Turner show and loved the breathtaking landscapes, ranging from ethereal to romantic. Next came Camera Atomica, with its disturbingly beautiful photos, depicting the magnitude of nuclear power and the devastation it can wrought. Lastly, I stopped it to view Liz Magor's clothing and artifacts in a box, with numerous boxes filled with branded clothing and found items stitched together to tell a story - it was an enjoyable exercise to ponder each box and attempt to decipher it's meaning. All in all, an excellent visit to the AGO today.

TSO Exposed: What Makes It Great - Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto 2

Just love this series. Really enjoyed hearing all about the history and structure of the piece and the style of the particular composer. The little asides on personality quirks are also amusing. And then there is the full performance of the piece in the second act - awesome!

Friday, 6 November 2015

Ossington - Legally Blonde

Great casting and creative tweaking of the story line created a perfect stage version of one of my daughter's ‎favourite films. Lots of fun, great dance numbers and non-stop laughs really hit the mark.

Tuesday, 3 November 2015

Acting Up Stage Company - Uncovered: Simon and Garfunkel

Fans of Simon and Garfunkel would not be disappointed with this show. The arrangements were well done, with only a few significant departures from the sounds we love. Awesome voices and interesting relationship tidbits provided a very enjoyable evening. Our group of 7 will all thrilled with the show.

Sunday, 1 November 2015

Mirvish - Sherlock Holmes

Playing to a packed house, we were clearly surrounded by Sherlock Holmes fans young and old. ‎A campy version, with the requisite villains and lady in distress, this rather unique Sherlock joyfully sleuths his way through a diabolical murder, too bad he couldn't deliver his lines consistently. Lady Irene seemed to be lost on stage much of the time. Watson finally warmed up in the second half. The only stand-out was the debonair Moriarty.

Wednesday, 28 October 2015

Theater Passe Muraille - Baram and Snieckus

Our first foray with Theatre Passe Muraille did not disappoint. Baram and Snieckus are a great comedic couple. ‎They transition seamlessly from one skit to the next, playfully engaging the audience at turns. Their timing is impeccable, a thoroughly enjoyable show. Strongly recommended for a fun night out.

Friday, 23 October 2015

Factory Theatre - Age of Arousal

Excellent show with a very strong cast across the board. This show really makes you think about how far we have come, or not come. ‎I loved the way the sub text was delivered, we really enjoyed the show and strongly recommend it.

Canstage - Beckett Trilogy: Not I, Footfalls, Rockaby

Well, that is an hour I will never get back. Three very short plays in the dark with minimal lighting, starting with illuminated lips speaking so fast the dialogue was almost unintelligible. The second play made me feel like I was trapped with a schizophrenic multi-personality, as one woman played a daughter as caregiver and her mom. In the final segment the repetition was tedious. As one patron observed, the plays were performed in complete darkness so we could not leave.

Field of Vision - 25 Years of Social Photography

It is worth the stop to take in the photography by PhotoSensitive in the lobby of 1 Adelaide E. There are moving, thought provoking and engaging photographs on several important social issues.

Friday, 16 October 2015

TSO - Back to the Future

The fans were not disappointed as the TSO played along with Marty. The venue was perfect and it was a real treat to experience the score live. And I got my picture taken next to the deLorean parked out front. More movies are coming up - you should check out the program.

Wednesday, 14 October 2015

Albert Schultz's Frankly Sinatra

More than I expected, I learned a lot in the show about the career trajectory of Frank Sinatra. In the easygoing style of the first act, Albert drew in the audience with his folksy style and reverse heckling. He is a great story teller, charming us with his excitement and duplicity and surprised us with his strong singing voice, supported no doubt by his awesome band. Despite having been to many Soulpepper productions I was not aware of his versatility. I was hoping for more songs and was not disappointed in the second act, where the shift focused less on story-telling, with a very classy closing of the story.

Lovely venue, by the way (Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts) and not all that far for a down-towner.

World Press Photo Exhibition

This photo exhibition tours the world and showcases some amazing work. It is presently showing in the atrium of Brookfield Place at Bay and Front (Toronto). I strongly recommend you take a few minutes in your lunch hour to check it out. If possible, you may want to stay away from the noon hour as we had to push through the crowds of school kids, clearly on an assignment. But what a great opportunity for them.

Tuesday, 13 October 2015

Soulpepper - Happy Place

An interesting name for this play. Not an uplifting topic, however depression and it's impact was handled in a respectful manner, sometimes humorous, but not making light of the dark things that can drive you there. A totally genuine and sympathetic cast. I strongly recommend this show.

Saturday, 10 October 2015

Wychwood Barns - Craft Ontario Show

This is one of my favourite shows - it is is a great venue, there is an amazing farmer's market to also browse through (go on Sat, really early if you want to get pies or other special items) and some fabulous artists in a smaller, more intimate setting. All of the chosen artists are very good and their wares are irresistible. Be sure to check it out next year !

Tuesday, 6 October 2015

Soulpepper - Marat/Sade

Not knowing much about the French Revolution, this really didn't enlighten me too much, but it captured the flavor of the time. The up to date presentation and score complemented the large ensemble cast, quirky costumes and props, resulting in a very enjoyable show.

Nuit Blanche

As we were out at a show anyway, we took the opportunity to stop in at a few Nuit Blanche installations on our way home.

We waited in line for about 20 min in front of the Gardener Museum to see the Silent Knight”, a sculpture of an owl made of 50,000 lego pieces by Ekow Nimako. Definitely worth the wait. This installation will be up until the end of the week so you should stop by.

Inside the Gardener was “The Bone Runners”, a ceramic installation by Nurielle Stern, which was both fascinating and fun. Attendees were encouraged to choose an axe head or spear tip from the many copies strewn along the floor in a pattern that seemed to guide you around the central sculpture. The latter was interesting as it encouraged people to pick them up, study them and really appreciate them.

I was forewarned that Nuit Blanche involved vague directions and lots of line-ups. Agree on the direction part, but this line-up wasn’t too bad – I imagine it is all about the your timing.

Ossington - Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story

The audience had lots of fun at this show. Obviously a lot of fans, but we went for the story as we only knew a few of his songs. His success and the number of hit songs he had in such a short period was quite remarkable. The show ended with a rousing concert, everyone was on their feet dancing - great show!

Victoria, B.C.

Based in the Empress Hotel for meetings, the grounds and location are gorgeous. The Hotel is a little odd in orientation, but it still feels classy.

I have a few hours to explore the city so head right from the Empress Hotel along Government St, with lots of lovely shops. You will find the souvenir shops here, a number of your standard chains, and some other more local shops. Definitely worth a stop at Artina's, for some beautiful glass bead, silver, etc jewelry, all by Canadian artists.

Turning right on Fort St, it is a charming 20 min walk past antiques stores and cafes to Craigdarroch Castle, the home of a coal baron. Built in the late 1800's, I recommend taking in the movie, with a fascinating story of its many uses, from schools to hospitals.

Heading off to find Beacons Hill Park and the tallest totem pole on the island, I detour at Government House to walk around the grounds and visit the Tea House. Definitely worth the stop, although the tip that there was a great local artist collective in the basement of the mall at Fort and Douglas, was too late for me - a little shout out for Migration here, although there was a selection of their work at the Tea House gift shop as well.

Unfortunately that detour left me with insufficient time to make it to Beacon Hill - I should not have slept in this morning :(

The return walk back along Fairfield was fascinating, as there was a very eclectic mix of architecture, old and modern, Victorian features and wrought iron‎.

Wednesday, 23 September 2015

Mirvish - Motown

A great collage of songs and stories underlying the growth of Motown Records, before it was sold to Universal. Treating us to many of our favourite songs from that label, there were many stand-out performances, particularly from the lad playing the youngest Jackson Five, and really tight choreography. A fun and inspiring evening - highly recommended.

Tuesday, 22 September 2015

Soulpepper - Yours Forever, Mary-Lou

Dysfunctional and unforgiving, the patterns of bad behavior are almost hard to watch.‎ A very intense play, the characters are genuine. You really feel their pain and frustration and the futility of the place they created for themselves.  The entire cast is outstanding, their accents amazing - highly recommended.‎

Friday, 18 September 2015

Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition

An annual event in Nathan Phillips Square, deferred from July due to the Panam Games, the show was a little smaller, but no less wonderful than in previous years. The quality and variety of artisans is amazing, with the perfect mix of regular favourites and new entrants. It is so hard to keep your wallet in your purse :)

Sunday, 13 September 2015

Cabbagetown Arts and Crafts Festival

A stellar show for jewelry, with lots of selection and some of the best the city has to offer. There are also lots of interesting textiles, pottery and yummy preserves and such. The artists are all friendly and relaxed and Riverdale Farm is an excellent distraction for the younger set, leaving you with ample time to chat and shop. Impossible to get out of this show with your wallet intact.

Saturday, 12 September 2015

Trinity Bellwoods Park - Outdoor Art Show and Sale

One of my favourite shows for unique pottery and wall art, this is also a great neighbourhood to hang out in. Drop in for coffee and pastries before the show, peruse various forms of art in a lovely setting and then head off to Ossington for a nice dinner. You can even top it off with the best ice cream in the city at Bang Bang on Ossington.

Friday, 11 September 2015

Créations Musca Inc (part of the Cirque de Soleil group) - Empire

OMG, you have to run out and get tickets right away. The acrobatics, strength, showmanship and plenty of eye candy are worth every cent and more. Awesome show that had us talking about it exuberantly well after the show ended. Oh, and a little warning if you have minors with you, there is nudity.‎..

Tuesday, 8 September 2015

Soulpepper - The Plays The Thing

A fun little farce of a play within a play. The playwright was great and the butler was hysterical, both parts played by company stalwarts. Definitely a fun night out.

Saturday, 29 August 2015

CNE - A Day in the Park

Lots of fun shows to take in. For shopping the International marketplace and the Arts, Crafts and Hobby Building are strong favourites. And, of course, no visit is complete without several forays into the Food Building, although I sort of miss the preponderance of pure junk food back in the day.

Sunday, 23 August 2015

Molson Amphitheater - Blue Rodeo

A real pleasure, the opportunity to enjoy both the powerful voice of Matt Anderson, and a home town favourite band. The crowd welcomed Matt in the opening act and he did not disappoint. But the crowd didn't need warming up for Blue Rodeo, they were clearly devout fans - everybody knew the words. Great solos, awesome vocals and showmanship, a fabulous band. A great summer venue and terrific family outing.

CNE - Bon Voyage! Aerial Acrobatics & Ice Skating Show

A very well choreographed mix of skating and acrobatics, this show should be on your essential list for your CNE visit. Featuring Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir this is a classy show. There were some amazing performances from the other skaters and the acrobats were also awesome.

Wednesday, 12 August 2015

Mirvish - Oh Canada: What a Feeling !

Tracing Canadian rock/pop artists from 1964 to 1991, it felt like a trip down memory lane. With an accomplished band, some awesome guitar solos and amazing vocalists, particularly Amy Bishop channeling KD Lang, you will recognize all of these memorable hits.

Sunday, 9 August 2015

Fern - Aug 1-9

The land of rolls and honey. A Ferntastic family place, with great food and lots of things to do for everyone. Best part - the kids will spend all day with new friends, leaving you to relax and refresh. Then you all get to enjoy a wonderful family dinner and "night out" as there is a family show to attend every evening. And the best show is put on by the staff themselves. Highly recommended and even more fun if you can convince some friends to go with you.

Friday, 31 July 2015

Ossington Theatre - Mary Poppins

A stellar cast, the casting was bang on. Great family fun, lots of energy and enthusiasm on stage and much more than the movie, incorporating additional content from the book. Great music and choreography. It was a fantastic show, with an utterly charming cast - we strongly recommend.

Tuesday, 21 July 2015

Mirvish - Newsies

Definitely a family friendly musical, the choreography and soundtrack was fabulous. An all around stellar cast, with great "newsie" personalities - whimsical, naive and youthful. A little more special because it was based on true life.

Saturday, 18 July 2015

Ossington Theatre - Rocket Man: Celebrating Elton John

This musical review was a  well curated time travel through the career of Elton John. The song selection was awesome and it must have been a challenge to narrow it down. The four person vocal group played off each other very well, with some virtuoso performances by the band. Clearly a crowd favourite, judging by the robust audience response. Very fun way to spend an evening out with a group of friends.

Sunday, 12 July 2015

Toronto 2015 PanAm Games - Roller Sports: Figure Skating Free Program

We were so disappointed to not see Canada get a medal in the women's long program, but it was a tight race between three skaters for silver, bronze and just out of the medals. In the Men's competition, Brazil received a standing ovation, as it was clear to everyone this was the gold medal performance. It was awesome to be able to see that live.

T.O. Fringe Festival - My Big Fat German Puppet Show

Whimsical, creative, not your average puppet show. Incorporating audience participation, current events and a stage you have never seen before, this multi-talented warbling puppeteer was chosen among the best of the Fringe.

Saturday, 11 July 2015

Toronto 2015 PanAm Games - Roller Sports: Figure Skating Free Program

The short program featured 8 competitors each, but Canada was only represented in the women's competition. Not surprisingly, roller figure skating is very similar to ice skating, but with fewer elements as certain jumps and movements are not feasible on roller skates.  There were several top women and a clear leader on the men's side. Can't imagine the pressure on the Canadian competitor in front of a raucous home crowd. One male competitor was not at the same level as the others - it was courageous of him to compete and the other skaters were very supportive. We really enjoyed the competition and were very glad we bought tickets to experience it live.

T.O. Fringe Festival - Summerland

Absolutely amazing show. What a very talented bunch of kids from Toronto's top performing arts schools. A great, but familiar, story, awesome music and dancing, excellent choreography. Fabulous use of a large and diverse cast. Can't say enough about this fully sold out (sorry) show.

Friday, 10 July 2015

T.O. Fringe Festival - Caws and Effect

A charming shadow puppet show, demonstrating the harshness of a bird's life through predators and pollution, is dramatized with overhead projectors and uncanny raven imitations. Multi-talented, the performers also recorded and arranged the beautiful soundtrack. Several sold out shows and today's enthusiastic crowd attests to the strong appetite for this medium.

Tuesday, 7 July 2015

T.O. Fringe Festival - The McComedy Show

There were moments of brilliance and demonstrated versatility, with a variety of characters inspired by television. But somehow the overall effort didn't connect with us. Perhaps you need to be more of a sitcom fan .....

T.O. Fringe Festival - Morro and Jasp do Puberty

Not for the squeamish, ‎these clowns bring a refreshing and hilarious look at adolescence, from bodily changes to hormonal influences. Be prepared to vicariously relive your most embarrassing adolescent moments. A great hit and clearly an audience favourite.

Monday, 6 July 2015

T.O. Fringe Festival - Peter N' Chris Present: Here Lies Chris

Awesome duo - this is definitely a show to see. Highly recommended and with an obvious following, Chris and Peter delivered non-stop physical comedy, with a sharp wit. They were literally all over the place !

T.O. Fringe Festival - 2 Ruby Knockers, 1 Jaded Dick: A Dirk Darrow Investigation

Punny and full of magic tricks, this parody of a film noir detective movie was jam packed with laughs, groaners and good ones alike. Audience participation is mandatory.

Sunday, 5 July 2015

T.O. Fringe Festival - Becoming Burlesque

I'm not a fan of dance, but burlesque is different. Very talented dancers, with lots of twirking and tasseling to ensure a raucous crowd. Cute little storyline also provided some comic relief.

T.O. Fringe Festival - Graham Clark Reads the Phone Book

Who would have thought the phone book could be so funny. Hilarious mix of irreverent tour of the phone book and ad lib, allowing the audience to shape the show by choosing a letter. You will enjoy this!

T.O. Fringe Festival - The Untitled Sam Mullins Project

Sam is an excellent story-teller, connecting easily with the audience as he shared four of his truths. Three parts comedy, 1 part drama, highly recommended.

Tremblant Resort - Day 8 - Going Home

It's a leisurely breakfast in the room as everyone packs up. A last minute trip on the Luge track and then picked up some pitas to take to the airport for lunch, as there won't be another opportunity to find food until we get home. Porter shuttle arrives promptly, we arrive, pay the steep departure tax and settle in for the trip home. Overall a great way to spend a week with friends, lots to do, great food and the convenient Porter flights makes Mont Tremblant very accessible.

Tremblant Resort - Day 7 - Mountain Hike

Taking my favourite Le Cabriolet lift to the bottom of the hill for a delicious breakfast of highly embellished waffles at Bisto au Grain de Cafe, this definitely called for a serious hike to burn off the calories. The Gondola ride to the top of the mountain never gets old and delivers us to a variety of trails. We go up to the look-out spot, offering an amazing view of the town below for just a short climb. Then we choose the 360 degree moderate hike, which circumnavigates the top of the mountain along a wooded trail, popping out from time to time at the ski runs, to magnificent views. Lots of benches or chairs along the way, to either rest or just contemplate the view.

Finishing off the afternoon with a swim, the hotel pool and hot tub was still pretty crowded - it really is a family resort .....

Dinner tonight at Wok was a hit. Everyone ordered something different and no one was disappointed. From the salmon to the curries to the calamari to Singapore noodles, all plates were licked clean.

Wednesday, 1 July 2015

Tremblant Resort - Day 6 - Rain

Now we know why it is so incredibly lush and green here. When it rains, it really rains. Thank goodness we brought raincoats and umbrellas, or we would be stuck in the room. At the bottom of the resort shopping strip we jump on a bus and head to the old town for lunch and a little exploring. Mostly restaurants and bike shops, it is quaint. The rain let up long enough for us to walk back along the bike path - I wasn't paying attention but it was under an hour at a comfortable pace. It's a lovely walk or bike ride.

Afternoon coffee at Bistro au Grain de Cafe at the top of the hill, it was difficult to resist the scrumptious looking pastries. Coffee and ambiance were lovely. Picked up some chocolate at Rocky Mountain for later, obviously a popular spot, it was crowded.

Couldn't resist going back to La Diable for the ribs again. Had a fun evening back in the room with a bottle of wine and a deck of cards and then out to the base of the mountain at 10:30 to catch a fabulous fireworks display to commemorate Canada Day.

Tuesday, 30 June 2015

Tremblant Resort - Day 5 - Biking and Hiking

Breakfast out at Le Maison de la Crepe was a treat with delicious coffee and crepes on the patio. The group split up, with half renting mountain bikes for a two hour trek, one renting a regular bike to take the bike path into the old town and the rest wandering along the hiking trail that follows the stream. When we convened back in our room for a late lunch of leftovers, it was clear everyone had a great time.

Taking some time to do a little shopping, I have to say the sales tax here is a bit of a bite. It's 15% for Quebec, plus an additional 3% for the resort. Discourages you from shopping at the chain stores.

Dinner at La Diable where almost everyone in our party of 8 ordered their specialty, the ribs, which were amazing.

Monday, 29 June 2015

Tremblant Resort - Day 4 - Adventure

Time to test our mettle, both families set out for the two hour climbing and zip-line challenge, the Adventure Tremblant. An aerial obstacle course, rising to about 30' above ground and within enough of a canopy to protect us from light rain, we climb, walk on tight ropes, cross rickety bridges, crawl through nets and soar on zip lines. Definitely something I would do again and a lot of family fun, as the kids enjoy laughing at their moms (dads were more fit and upper body strength in particular is an asset).

Delicious lunch, with awesome fries, at Bullseye is followed by the Luge track. They are right - you can't do just one (well I can, but the kids couldn't). Closing off the afternoon, we soak our tired muscles in the hot tub and hang out by the pool. The pool is too small for lengths and it's quite busy with boisterous families, but nice enough.

Had a delicious steak dinner at Le Forge, parking the kids in the downstairs patio while the adults enjoyed a quieter ambiance on the balcony upstairs.

Sunday, 28 June 2015

Tremblant Resort - Day 3 - Relaxing

Breakfast in the room and just relaxing on the balcony gives us a pretty slow start to the day. Checking out the lifts, we wander around town and have fun going up and down the lifts. Grabbed some delicious falafel wraps at Pita Express and for a late lunch and decide to see Spy at the cute little cinema. We enjoyed a late dinner at Coca Pazza - a delicious Italian meal, with home made pasta. Yum!

Saturday, 27 June 2015

Tremblant Resort - Day 2 - Exploring

Our day starts with a leisurely breakfast in the room, having picked up some groceries from the well stocked market the evening before. Parents can have coffee while the teens sleep in and then breakfast is quick.

Our accommodation includes a pass for the gondola so we head up the mountain to look around. The trip is about 15 minutes and offers an amazing view of the village as you climb. At the summit you can truly appreciate the majesty of the mountains. We pass people climbing up the mountain, very ambitious, and some of our party choose to take a leisurely walk back down. Several hours later, they come crawling back to the room. A mediocre lunch at Puesta del Sol is disappointing, we should have joined the others at Samurai Sushi Pub, for which they gave rave reviews.

The afternoon is spent touring the many lovely shops in the village, after dropping off my 17 year old at Le Source, where they have a squat rack. The hotel gym was not bad, but doesn't have the particular equipment he needs. Finished a great day with yummy pizzas on the terrace at Pizzateria. It's only a short trip to La Vache for delicious home made gelato.

Friday, 26 June 2015

Tremblant Resort - Day 1 - Arrival

Flying direct to Mont Tremblant, our arrival at this quaint little airport sets the stage for that "village" ambiance. Enjoying a scenic drive to the resort we arrive at Sommet des Neiges, with lots of time left in the day to tour around. It is, after all, just a short trip from Toronto. The kids are duly impressed with our accommodations, a very spacious two bedroom suite, with fully equipped kitchenette. We have met up here with friends from Australia and, at first reconnaissance, we agree there is lots to do do for everyone.

A little wander about the grounds, to check out the activities available and get the lay of the land, we finish the evening with good burgers and fajitas at Le Shack.

Mirvish - Kinky Boots

Absolutely great fun. An amazing and talented cast, hitting every nuance, high note and dance step, with non-stop hilarious quips and physical comedy. Cindy Lauper's score is wonderful. Rooting for the son who is trying to live up to his father's expectations, while trying to be his own man, you will love this show!

Luminato - Contemporary Colour

Not sure what to expect, we were very pleasantly surprised. Presenting 10 Colour Guard teams, it was nice to see some Canadian schools, as I had never heard of Colour Guard and thought It was particular to the U.S. Not easily classified, art vs sport, this passionate sub culture is rooted in military bands, hence lots of twirling of rifles, sabers and flags. Creative choreography, contemporary music, costumes reminiscent of Cirque and customized floor mats complete the show. The enthusiasm by the participants was infectious and they wowed the audience.

Luminato - 7 Monologues: SPAM

Intriguing approach as the story unfolded over 31 days, but not in consecutive order. A man, who has lost his memory, struggles to find clues to his identity. Plot lines intersect as we bounce randomly over the past 31 days. While we enjoyed the show, some plot lines were hard to decipher and the show was too long (2 1/2 hours with no intermission).

Luminato - 7 Monologues: Spell to Bring Lost Creatures Home

Charming and enjoyable show. A series of vignettes, presented with cut-outs on an overhead projector, unfold with accompanying music and sound effects.  The stories are interesting and the timing of the 2 performers is impeccable. The music is lovely. My daughter and I really enjoyed this show.

Luminato - 7 Monologues: El pasado es un animal grotesco (The Past is a Grotesque Animal)

Out of our party of 4, I was the only one that liked the play, although the others appreciated the unique approach. With a steadily revolving stage, featuring four different backdrops, I quite enjoyed experiencing the disconnected stories as they unfolded, sometimes intersecting, but playing out each scene in accordance with their allotted time in front of the audience. It was an interesting reflection of the challenge millenials may now be facing in the workforce - a struggle to convert a series of jobs into a career, desperately trying to land that opportunity that will make a difference.

TSO POPS - The Wizard and I: Broadway Hits

Performing the songs of Stephen Schwartz (Pippin, Godspell, Wicked) was a fabulous cast of 4 amazing Broadway stars. With a selection of memorable songs from Broadway, including the best of Wicked, and less heard songs from Schwartz's repertoire of other work, every one was a joy and a fitting end to this year's concert season. Having two "wickeds" spar was awesome.

Soulpepper - Eurydice

Eurydice unfolds in a very leisurely fashion, truly conveying a sense of timelessness. We root for Orpheus, knowing he cannot win, and mourn for what the dead have lost. We absolutely loved the stones! Touching and beautifully executed.

Riverdale Art Walk

A fun way to spend a morning, grab a coffee and lunch, visiting the cafes and shops along Queen, just east of Broadview, that were displayed local artists' work. Finishing up at Jimmy Simpson Park, where numerous established and new artists were displaying their work, we found some special pieces to bring home. Really enjoyed the show and will be putting it on my list for next year!

Soulpepper - Bedroom Farce

An entertaining show, with enough laughs to make for an enjoyable evening, but somehow feeling a little dated. The elderly couple stole the show, the other characters were just a little too narcissistic to garner much sympathy.

Tuesday, 2 June 2015

Lower Ossington - The 39 Steps

Absolutely hilarious! In a small intimate space, this stellar cast, with a real art for slapstick, draws you into the intrigue while seriously tickling your funny bone. To top it off, an awesome trio provided the dramatic effect. Practically sold out, you must act right away if you want to see this show.

Hamilton - 10th Annual Tastes of Downtown

At a recent girlfriend's weekend, we decided to give the tour of independent restaurants in downtown Hamilton a try. We were very pleasantly surprised. with several simultaneous tours, each group of 12 visited 5 of the possible 15 participating restaurants. We had excellent service and food at Stairways (good Polish home cooking), La Piazza (awesome Italian, complete with wine pairings), Honest Lawyer (delicious pub apps), Gate of India (authentic!), 2 Black Sheep (oysters galore). While all warrant a repeat visit, and many of the others out guide pointed out along the way were intriguing, our hands down favourite was La Piazza. The enthusiasm of the chef and sommelier were as intoxicating as the food.

Soulpepper - The Dybbuk or Between Two Worlds

I just loved this show, although it took me a little while to get into it at the beginning, with so much going on.  Brilliant staging. I'm afraid to say anything - there's just too much good stuff I wouldn't want to give away. I strongly recommend.

Sunday, 24 May 2015

Acting Up Stage Company - Ballad of the Burning Star

A unique and creative approach to telling a story. At times the language and dance was aggressive, but this helped us to appreciate the tension the families were living through. A very effective way to teach about the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, generating lots of conversation.

Friday, 22 May 2015

Art of Time Ensemble - Songbook 8: Brent Carver

Extraordinary show - awesome arrangements, amazing musicians and Brent Carver was both endearing and outstanding. Andrew Burashko has not disappointed with a fresh arrangement of some old favourites. Next year's season is now on sale - I recommend you subscribe.

RSGC Grad Parents and Sons BBQ

I have to mention this event, although it was a personal one relating to my son vs a publicly available event, because I was very impressed with how the college reinforces their values. RSGC has 10 qualities that they strive to instill in their students. All of the graduating boys received recognition for the quality they most exemplified. It was a lovely way to recognize each graduate, as well as reinforce overall what it means to be a Georgian. Well done !

Mirvish - Titanic

Amazing staging and singing, the tension steadily building deliciously throughout the first act. Many stand-out performances, particularly vocals from Ben Heppner (Straus) and Beverage (boiler operator), and endearing characters played by Hume (head waiter) and Crowe (radio operator). I could really mention them all.

Soulpepper - Trudeau and Levesque

A sequel to Trudeau and the FLQ, this show also stands on its own, encapsulating a unique period in Canadian politics. The video cabaret style makes light work of serious matters and is a very enjoyable way to absorb a history lesson. I had a great evening with my 17 year old.  Strongly recommended for teens and up!

Factory Theatre - Morro & Jasp

Quite silly, as one would expect with clowns, but also a charming parody of a start-up company. Audience participation was very well integrated. The humour grew as the story developed and the characters matured. A fun night out if you enjoy silly office humour.

Friday, 8 May 2015

Dinner Theatre - Faulty Towers

An interesting dinner party - seated at tables of 8, we have an opportunity to meet new people, many of which are celebrating a birthday or anniversary. ‎A cast of 3, the married owners of the restaurant and the "english-language-challenged" head waiter, provide a non-stop barrage of jokes and slapstick in the vein of Monty Python. Even if you don't recall this British sitcom, starring John Cleese, of a few decades ago, you will enjoy a leisurely delicious dinner with old and new friends.

Tuesday, 5 May 2015

National Geographic Live! Pete McBride - Chasing Rivers

Featuring two major rivers, the Colorado and the Ganges, Pete and his team share their end to end journey. We are awed by the beauty, where the river is still clean and alive, and saddened by the sorry state of the effects in densely populated areas. His passion for water conservation makes us hopeful.

Friday, 24 April 2015

TSO - Fantasia

Featuring video clips from the original (1930) and remake (2000), accompanied by the TSO, you don't need to be a Mickey Mouse fan to enjoy this show. The visuals are stunning and the music is amazing, particularly when played live by the TSO. Lots of people of all ages came out for this one. It is one of my teens' favourites films and this was a very special presentation. We strongly recommend it.

Thursday, 16 April 2015

CanStage - Spotlight Africa: Ubu and the Truth Commission

Dark and sobering, this dramatization of Apartheid atrocities is eloquently told through multiple media. Very well integrated live actors, video, graphics and puppets. Not pleasant at times, but compelling.

TSO POPS - As Heard on TV

Nicole Parker Is an amazing performer - an unusual combination of comedian and singer. She had the audience in stitches with hilarious skits and improv, and mesmerized us with her awesome voice.  Steven Reineke never lets us down, we really enjoyed this concert.

Friday, 10 April 2015

Art of Time Ensemble - Intermezzi

Featuring the music of Brahms, this was a dreamy concert, particularly with Burashko on the piano. Innovatively choreographed, we were treated to a wonderfully fluid dance by Evelyn Hart, former principal ballerina of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, in the first half and an engaging puppet show in the second. What an interesting contrast!

Thursday, 9 April 2015

Canstage - African Spotlight: Nongogo

Superb acting and some unexpected twists. We like to believe its not over and have imagined a different scenario for what happens the next day - I hope forgiveness.

Friday, 3 April 2015

Factory Theatre - The Daisy Theatre

Absolutely amazing show. Ronnie Burkett is an awesome puppeteer and comedian, bringing his wonderful puppets to life with song and mirth. This unscripted show is not to be missed.

Thursday, 2 April 2015

Factory Theatre - The Unplugging

What would happen today if technology failed and survival depended on living off the land. Who knows how to fish, hunt, preserve, forage through the winter, make a fire. Who do you trust, how do communities come together, govern themselves, ... Many of these issues are presented and generate debate after. We loved this show and strongly recommend it.

Tuesday, 31 March 2015

Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike

Lots of laughs at this show. It was clever, even hysterical at points as it poked fun at family relationships and the crazy things we say and do to each other, safe in the knowledge that we'll still be loved. Fiona Reid was awesome, a standout in an excellent cast. I strongly recommend this show.

Tuesday, 24 March 2015

Soulpepper - The Gospel According to Mark

Well, that's an hour and a half I will never get back. While Kenneth Welsh recited the Gospel of Mark beautifully, I am not a church goer nor inclined to spend my time in scripture. Was expecting something a little different.

Friday, 20 March 2015

Soulpepper - Subway Stations of the Cross

An interesting series of religious spoken poems, delivered in costume, punctuated by song. Sometimes lyrical, sometimes serious, occasionally unintelligible, it is a good thing its not too long. Ins Choi is an excellent playwright and actor and this play was strangely compelling, but unfortunately not to our taste.

Tuesday, 17 March 2015

Canstage - Harper Reagan

Quite intense and a very convincing portrait of a women in crisis, excellently portrayed by Molly Parker. A solid cast, expertly carrying the show with a minimalist set. We thoroughly enjoyed this play.

Wednesday, 11 March 2015

Mirvish - Blithe Spirit

It was such a treat to see Angela Lansbury live. She made a lovely medium, both charming and delightfully acerbic.  Full of comedic moments, surprises and very well executed, we really enjoyed this play.

Tuesday, 10 March 2015

National Geographic Live - Untamed Antartica

Once again, these guys are nuts. I can't imagine thinking its a good idea to live at the tip of Antarctica in a tent for several weeks and scaling a mountain that scares me silly. And in sub zero temperatures. Crazy people! But awesome photographs and video footage!

Saturday, 7 March 2015

Video Games Live

We just love the amazing music made for video games and it's awesome to have it accompanied by clips of the games. This show also includes lots of fun interludes, like pitting video games against each other and audience challenges. It's an annual crowd pleaser, drawing repeat roars from the audience.

Thursday, 5 March 2015

Acting Up Stage Company - The Wild Party

Quite the cornucopia of characters on stage - from divas to queens to clowns to gigolos. Definitely had a vaudeville vibe, tackling many thorny themes by a very talented cast. Really made you want to join the party.

Tuesday, 3 March 2015

Soulpepper - The Dining Room

Excellent! I heard that phrase from a number of people around me. Six actors played around 50 characters, which required some pretty quick costume changes. I can't even begin to list my favourite characters, there were just too many. And an outstanding cast. I heartily recommend this charming show!

Sunday, 1 March 2015

Mirvish - Cannibal! the Musical

‎Pretty campy, silly and absurd. But lots of laughs and lots of fun. Not for the young or the prudish, so we very much enjoyed it! One week left, so book your tickets now if you need to let loose.

Friday, 27 February 2015

Art of Time Ensemble - Magic and Loss: A Tribute to Lou Reed

Amazing musicians and arrangements of Lou Reed songs. Obviously many audience favourites, judging from the enthusiastic response, closing with an awesome rendition of The Wild Side. All the performers were great - it would be unfair to single any one out.

Wednesday, 25 February 2015

Mirvish - Robin Hood

My daughter saw this show the first time on Christmas Eve and couldn't wait to go again. She enjoyed it just as much this time, eagerly anticipating the best parts, and wanting to see it yet again! It was campy and fun, charming and athletic, with really creative staging. A wonderful family night out or date night.

Saturday, 21 February 2015

Soulpepper - Accidental Death of an Anarchist

Based on a real life event in Italy in 1969, this play was a brilliant farce of police work gone awry. Updated for Toronto and current events, there were many parallels and comic moments that you weren't sure you should really be laughing
at. Filled with racial stereotyping, off color mayoral
references, its a real shame if you missed this. The last show was today, but we can hope that Soulpepper brings it back in the near future.

Wednesday, 18 February 2015

TSO POPS - From Bach to Bluegrass

We thoroughly enjoyed the "Time for Three" classically  trained string trio, who had a lot of fun mashing classical music with some rousing country and pop music. These guys were absolutely awesome and are extremely talented, making the instruments do some incredible things.

Thursday, 12 February 2015

Factory Theatre - Twisted

A very raw interpretation of Oliver Twist. This type of story has been told many times and unfortunately this version was not fresh. The gallant, but ultimately futile attempt to save someone who was not really interested in saving themselves only started to move us towards the end. Thank goodness the performers were outstanding.

Sunday, 8 February 2015

CanStage - The Other Place

Tamsin Kelsey is awesome in her portrayal of a woman, used to commanding the room as a respected researcher, coming to grips with descent into early dementia. We grieve with her as she suffers anew from old unpleasant memories, re-establishing their grip. And in some way we also identify with her suffering husband, desperately wanting his wife back, although he is selfish in his behaviour. Very powerful performance - we strongly recommend it.

Friday, 6 February 2015

ROM - Friday Night Live: Carnival

A lovely night out at the ROM with food, drinks and entertainment. While we weren't really free to explore the ROM with our wine, there were sufficient galleries where this was permitted to enjoy the experience. The food vendors had scrumptious offers, bars were set up everywhere and the calypso, salsa, etc. music enhanced the festive feel. If you decide to attend one of these events I recommend you head up a level for your purchase of food/drink tickets, particularly upon arrival, as there are no line-ups there. Going with a group of friends seemed to be the norm.

Thursday, 5 February 2015

Ossington Theatre - Spring Awakening

Fitting just about every coming of age experience one might expect in a play about young adults, this could be a little overwhelming. However, the score, comedic moments and sensitivity carry us through. Enjoy some amazing dance numbers and powerful voices. Judging from the audience at our performance, also a big crowd pleaser.

Saturday, 31 January 2015

TIFF - Oscar Nominated Shorts

I don't usually write about films, but this is special. The TIFF was screening the Oscar nominated short films in the Live Action and Animation categories so we decided to make it a double feature. Appropriate for teens and up both categories were amazing. These Shorts provided a window into a particular cultural or situational problem with sensitivity and grace. The animated ones added a little humour or whimsy, which does not detract from the underlying message. Can't wait to find out which ones appealed most to the Oscar jury!

Toronto Region Board of Trade - 127th Annual Dinner: Celebrating our Vibrant City Region

Drawing all sorts of influential people, the annual BOT dinner is a great networking opportunity. The highlights of this dinner included CBC jokes by the MC Wendy Mesley (lots of material for that this year!) and the amazing musical talent of Dr. Draw. His electronic violin is wonderful - I would love to see him play with the TSO at a POPS concert.

Thursday, 22 January 2015

Knightwood - HER2

Very moving and so real - reflecting what we can endure for the hope of just a little more time. And we want to believe that community and emotional support can enhance our chances for survival. A strong cast, that felt like true friends. Despite the tragic circumstances, not morbid and not to be missed.

Tuesday, 20 January 2015

CanStage - Seagull

A tale of unrequited love, in many forms, we were drawn in by both selfish and foolish behaviour. Strong dialogue and superb casting, a sprinkling of humour and ‎creative staging kept us riveted.

Thursday, 15 January 2015

Off Mirvish - Boom

Talk about a trip down memory lane. Fusing the trajectory of the boomer from birth to adulthood, with the events that shaped who they are, there were many familiar points along the road, even though I am bringing up the tail end of the boomers. I really enjoyed reflecting on my age through the presentation, amazing myself at how poignant some of those moments still are for me. Rick Miller is a master impersonator and makes very creative use of technology to enhance his story. Definitely recommend this show.

Tuesday, 13 January 2015

Toronto Fringe: Next Stage Festival - Dink

Our final selection for the festival was a dark and somber play. We came away feeling speechless in the face of this horror. While tastefully handled and acted with empathy, we felt the helplessness of the situation and the violation. It really made you think.

Overall, we really enjoyed the Next Stage Festival and wished we had time to see them all. We are definitely coming back next year !

Friday, 9 January 2015

Toronto Fringe: Next Stage Festival - Big Shot

Jon Lachlan Stewart's performance was superb in his ability to portray multiple characters through incredible dexterity in facial expression, impressions and movement. His telling of a tale bringing film and stage together, filled with intrigue, melancholy and personal struggles was not a happy story, but somehow compelling. We strongly recommend this show.

Toronto Fringe: Next Stage Festival - Myth of the Ostrich

Number 2 of 4 that we signed up for, Myth of the Ostrich was funny, topical, and unpretentious - we can easily identify with the path that unfolds. The cast were amazing - three strong female performers who played off each other really well. Extremely well written, it was easy to identify with the characters - we all know someone just like one of them, or maybe you'll see yourself ....

Wednesday, 7 January 2015

Toronto Fringe: Next Stage Festival - For a Good Time, Call Kathy Blanchard

We're off to a great start, with the first of 4 plays we have scheduled. The script was very realistic, particularly for those of us from large families - the drama, tough love, chaos and perceived right to dictate how each member should live their life were so on point. The acting was outstanding across the entire cast.

Friday, 2 January 2015

Mirvish - Blades on Stage

What an awesome show - totally exceeded my expectations. I was skeptical as to how interesting it could be with so little ice surface. The choreography was amazing and very creative, set to a stellar selection of Broadway music and holiday favourites.  The skaters were all great, with some outstanding performances from Elvis, Shae-Lynn and Sean/Jodeyne. Fantastic family night out.
